Art in Counseling with Children: Applications and Interventions
Wednesday, February 13, 2019
7-9PM
CE Hours: 2
Fee: $40 - all materials and light refreshments provided
This program is for counselors, social workers, guidance counselors, and other associated or related clinical staff. No prior art experience necessary! Counseling with children can be challenging. Children may hesitate to trust helping professionals, but also have many difficult emotions and circumstances to process. Having the ability to engage young clients (and their families) in simple, non-threatening art activities can help open lines of communication and explore issues where one-to-one talk therapy cannot.
Participants will: learn simple ways to engage children and families in counseling using art-based strategies and techniques; strategies and techniques for discussing art based activity results; ways to incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy and other evidence-based theories with art based techniques to promote insight and coping skills.
Participants will leave with instructions and guidelines for 4 simple activities to use with children and/or families in counseling sessions. Trauma-informed work will be addressed and included, but will not be the sole focus of the presentation.
Presenter:
Lisa M. Corson, LPC, NCC
